A Tutorial for Cybervictims

It's not my fault. Everyone else is against me. One of the coolest things about modern collaborative tools is the ease with which you can filter out things you don't want to deal with.  It's come to my attention recently that some people don't know how these filters work, so I thought I'd take the time to provide a quick tutorial on how to use the blocking filters in most major collaboration tools used in our community.

Click through for more...
We'll start with Notes mail.  Blocking mail from someone is easy.  Just select an email from the person, then go to More, and select Block Mail from Sender...

You'll see a dialog box allowing you to block either the specific address or the entire domain.  Then click OK.

In Google mail, it's a little more complicated.  You seem to have to open a message from whoever you want to block.  Then select More actions and "Filter messages like these."

Then you click Next Step...

Then select "Delete it" and click Create Filter.

Blocking is also handy in the Sametime client.  To do that, go to the Tools menu and select Privacy Lists...

You'll then see the preferences for Privacy.  Select the "When I am Online" tab, click the checkbox to enable the list, select "Everybody EXCEPT" then type in the search bar to find the users you want to block.  When you're done, click "Apply"

It's even easier on Skype.  Just select the person in your contact list, right-click and choose Block This Person.

I use Trillian for other public chat services.  Again, blocking is as easy as right-clicking on the name in the contact list and selecting Block....

Followed by a quick confirmation dialog.

If you follow someone on Twitter, you can get rid of that too.  Just select them from your Following list, and you'll see a link on their stream page.

If someone's on your Facebook connections, you can get rid of them by going to the Friends tab, then typing their name in the search bar.  When you see them on the list, you'll see a grey X that will remove the connection.

Finally, if you want to get someone out of your Google reader, that's easy to.  Just select the feed and click Feed Settings... followed by Unsubscribe.

Don't forget to confirm.

And there you have it -- all the ways you can make sure you're never a victim again!  Remember, in cyberspace, no one can hear you scream.  But they can sure hear you whine.

Comments

1 - I'm actually surprised that none of your ALT tags said: "this is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object"...

2 - Little known fact: My wife clicked the Facebook option to "show less from this person" from my account.

In response to your post... I just didn't know Syth Lords spoke German.
