It's up!

The extended version of our BP101 talk is now visible in the DOWNLOADS section on my sidebar.  This is not the totally 100% complete version, as I'm still waiting for a few pieces from Chris, and there's still a couple of screenies that I need to document.  The technical documentation stuff is hardcore... lots of Photoshop work goes into making them as clear as possible.

I'm sure no one attended both versions of the sessions, by the way, but to be honest, they were pretty substantially different.  Strangely, I was MORE nervous the second time.  But we kept our pacing better and got through even some extra demos we hadn't anticipated, thus creating even more documentation responsibilities!  Still, in neither session did we get to the discussion on how to enhance the user experience after you've shipped the first version.  So I think I'll get into a series of blog posts here to drive that discussion.  Suffice it to say for now that user experience includes support and new releases as part of the process, so it's very important even in early designs to think about how your system with address bugs and documentation.  We cover that in some of the tail-end slides.

1 - I attended both sessions. The first one was THAT GOOD and you mentioned at the end that you might demo different stuff. How could I resist?

Very, very well done! I can honestly say you guys inspired me. It's been a while since I've been so EXCITED about building a new Notes app. Thanks for that.

2 - Excellent work Nathan. Nice Notes client apps are like a dog that speaks, very rare. Notes client apps this nice are like a dog that speaks Norwegian, even rarer. Emoticon

I'm look forward to having a look at the tech docs. Are you planning on releasing the demo apps?

3 - Hi! Just wanted to say it was great meeting you and hangin' out with you and Chris for a bit as your groupie! Emoticon You guys did an amazing job - both times!! Very impressive stuff!

You guys should definitely be invited back to Lotusphere!!

Thanks for showing us your 'tips'! Emoticon

4 - Nathan,

You and Chris did a great job!

5 - Thanks for the kind words.

I'm waiting for Chris's drag n' drop demo. I can TRY to put together NSFs to demo the contracts & med records stuff, but those are actual client applications that people own, so I'd have to do a lot of sanitation beyond just screenshots. That's an amount of time that will involve negotiating with my wife! Emoticon

Particularly in light of my desire to get rolling on some DXL projects at OpenNTF.org next week.

But I'll see what I can do.

6 - Thanks Nathan T. from H. Curtis!
I did remember the site and the search technique. Matter of fact, I searched on "Island" and I've been playing a little today with one of the palettes.
Sweet. :)

7 - Curt, the gradients in most of my demos were pretty easy. You can set the background color on a table cell to be solid, a vertical gradient or a horizontal gradient. Then you just give it starting and stopping color selections.

The stuff built from colourlovers was a little more complex. You can download the "Skinning Demo" to the right of this comment to get the NSF I used, but basically I quickly built a set of GIF images that I could then drop in as image resources and use COMPUTED backgrounds on several objects to render. There are a number of annoying limitations to this technique, but it makes for a great way to get a feel for a color palette.

Remember, { Link } is my tools of choice precisely because you can search for a keyword concept, instead of an RGB value. Try stuff like "Disney" or "Lotus" or "Florida" or "Spring" and you'll see some amazing palettes that can easily be plugged into applications.

8 - Awsome presentation!
I was interested in how you did the gradient effect(among a ton of other things). You quickly went through looking at Colourlovers.com, getting a palette and applying to your Notes app. Do you have it documented how you did that?
Thanks.

9 - Yes, Don, they are unfortunately restricted to their own frameset.

However, if what you want is a slide-out type interface, try using captions on the frameset instead. You can see one in slide 71 of the PPT. I didn't give a bunch of detailed documentation on that one, but I think there's something at { Link } for you on that. It's really just as simple as the "caption" setting on a frameset which allows an easy collapse on it.

10 - @10: Thanks, Nathan. Yet another new design option that I missed (like layers). I may use that at some point but I'd really like to be able to mimic the bookmark bar where it slides out over the top of what is there (unless you pin it, of course). Maybe in Notes 8? Emoticon

FYI, your site is displaying funny in IE6. All the sidebar stuff is at the bottom of the page - so everything is in one column rather than two.

11 - Nathan, I was playing around a little with layers and came up with a question. Are layers restricted to displaying in their own frameset? I tried to create a thin horizontal frame at the top for a nav bar which, when I click a button, would display an outline in a layer. But the layer disappeared behind my bottom frame.

Am I missing a setting or is this normal behavior? It'd be really cool to be able to do a slide out like the bookmark bar (well, more like a "slide down" in this case, I guess).

Thanks,
Don

12 - Thank you SO much for the link to Colourlovers. I normally use one of two websites to come up with color palettes, but this one is pretty cool, too.

Just to share, I use { Link } which allows you to reference a graphic file (i.e. a photo) and have a color palette generated for you. I also like { Link } for tweaking a palette after picking a starting color.

13 - I unfortunately didn't make it to Lotusphere, but did download your presentation. It's beautiful; I'm not a designer by any means but am inspired to try some new interface elements. I would like to get the icons you used in the medical app., but the link you list in the presentation { Link } redirects to { Link } an interactive whiteboard company. Could you provide another URL for that?

14 - Whoops, never mind. Apparently the URL is VirutalLnk, with an L, not Virtual INK. My bad.
